Overview

In the United States, a permit is required from the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. You will need Form 5110.74, "Application for an Alcohol Fuel Producer". If you are producing less than 10,000 proof gallons of alcohol per year for use as fuel, the permit is free of charge. Permit application is two pages and is usually very quickly granted. A brief phone call with an A.T.F. agent and your permit should arrive in two weeks.

A quick link to the permit is found here

Mail your permit to the following address:

Director, National Revenue Center, 550 Main St, Ste 8002, Cincinnati, OH 45202-5215.

Rules and Regulations

These regulations must be followed to for anyone producing fuel alcohol. Violation of these regulations could result in federal imprisonment, fine, or both.

Denaturing

Ethanol produced on-site can in no way shape or form be used or even remain in a form usable for human consumption. All fuel must be completely denatured by the use of gasoline or another A.T.F. approved denaturing agent. Two percent gasoline is the usual denaturant. Most denaturants do not appear to have an affect on the ethyl ester process.

Full list of authorized denaturants can be found here.

Logging

All fuel production must be logged. Gallons produced, day of production and proof quality are required entries.
